Atlantic Center for the Arts is doing an artist-in-residence program focusing on playwrights this season, and big-deal playwrights Dael Orlandersmith, right, and Annie Baker, below right, will be among the three writers who will be working there during the summer of 2011.
Orlandersmith is best known hereabouts for Yellowman, which Mad Cow Theatre did in the 2003-2004 season. Baker had a hit off-Broadway last fall with Circle Mirror Transformation, which Mad Cow is presenting in February and March.
Atlantic Center hasn’t yet announced the third playwright, but all three will work with associate artists (mid-career and emerging artists) — 24 of them in all.
As several local playwrights know, this is a fantastic chance to work closely with writers who are on the cutting edge of their craft.
The residency will be June 27-July 17, and the deadline to apply will be March 25 on this website. The full info — including the name of the third playwright, as well as each playwright’s application requirements for associate artists — is expected on the Atlantic Center’s website in September.
And for those of you who aren’t playwrights, the Atlantic Center always offers several outreach sessions during each residency, which are a terrific way to hear and see what the master artists are working on.
This is one residency I’m eagerly awaiting.
