Betty Buckley to star in ‘Tales of the City’ musical

Good news from the Maupin family: My cousin Armistead says that Betty Buckley (Sunset Boulevard, Carrie, Cats) will play Anna Madrigal in a workshop of the musical version of Tales of the City, which is making its debut at American Conservatory Theatre in San Francisco next spring.

(I’ve been sitting on this news for a couple of weeks, so I’m happy it’s finally gone public.)

Buckley will take on the role that was played memorably by Olympia Dukakis in the TV version of the story.

The book of the musical (based on Armistead’s books Tales of the City and More Tales of the City) is by Jeff Whitty (Avenue Q) and the music is by Jason Sellards (Jake Shears) and John Garden of the Scissors Sisters. Jason Moore (Avenue Q, Shrek the Musical) will direct.

The ACT workshop this fall won’t necessarily be the same cast as the production next spring, but the eventual goal is Broadway. Here’s more on the story.
