Here’s a revised audition notice for City of Angels:
Surfside Players announces OPEN AUDITIONS for City of Angels, the Tony-winning jazz musical:
Relive the romance and intrigue of film noir and the glitz and glamour of the Golden Age of Hollywood. Surfside Players, Cocoa Beach, is proud to announce OPEN AUDITIONS for its spring musical, City of Angels, winner of the 1990 Tony Award for Best Musical. Music by Cy Coleman (Sweet Charity), lyrics by David Zippel (The Goodbye Girl), and book by Larry Gelbart (M*A*S*H).
In a black-and-white world of shadows and streetlights, hard-boiled detective Stone is approached by a wealthy socialite begging him to track down the men who kidnapped her stepdaughter. In the course of his investigation, he is beaten up by thugs and framed for murder, and his past returns to haunt him. This is the grim tale that mystery novelist Stine is adapting into a screenplay in the late 1940s, but egotistical producer-director Buddy Fiedler constantly demands rewrites. The stress overwhelms Stine and causes him to seek comfort in an extramarital affair, and as the rewrites destroy the integrity of his work, Stone steps out of the “reel” world to confront Stine.
Actors in City of Angels portray both characters in the mystery story and shining Hollywood celebrities. The grittiness of Raymond Chandler-esque detective fiction and film noir is shown in a setting on stage done in black and white, while swinging jazz numbers and heartbreaking love songs form a tribute to the Big Band era.
