Audition notice: Forbidden Fruit’s ‘Rent’

Here’s an audition notice from Sean Flynn at Forbidden Fruit Productions:

I am writing this in hopes of encouraging as many non-theatre people as possible! Seriously, I want raw musical talent.

Forbidden Fruit Productions presents Jonathan Larson’s Rent
August 18-21 and 25-28

A fascinating conceptual version of Jonathan Larson’s 1996 Pulitzer-Prize winning musical Rent directed by Sean Flynn.  Local artist Swam and his fellow B-Side Artists have agreed to collaborate on what is to be a very fresh take on a musical that defined a generation.

Gearing away from the realism of the original, this production will take on a “show within a show” approach. Audiences will see a story unfold as homeless artists present a “Sidewalk Performance.”

The audience will be transported to a warehouse in New York City where a village of homeless performers creates art to make a living. Using only what they find on their daily dumpster dives, and what is littered on the street, they have put together something quite beautiful. A story of heart. The performers accompany each other on their own instruments and have put together their own lighting system made from leftover Christmas and Halloween décor.

Seeking male and female performers of all ethnicities and backgrounds. Must be 18 years or older. Please wear plain clothing, loose-fitting preferred, and do not wear makeup.

  • Prepare 32-Bars of a non-musical theater song (Preferably 90s Alternative: Rock, Indie, Grunge etc.)
  • If you play an instrument please accompany yourself (Piano/Guitar/Ukulele/Pots and Pans/Buckets…BE CREATIVE)
  • Accompanist will be provided for those who do not.
  • No headshot needed
  • We will be taking photos of you at the audition.
  • All roles are paid.
