FantasyLand Theatrical, which has been producing theater at Pointe Orlando on International Drive since last August, has gotten the rights to produce the 2007 hit musical Xanadu — the one about the roller-skating Greek muse. The show will open in April.
Xanadu replaces Side Show, the 1997 musical about a pair of Siamese twins who work as a carnival act, on FantasyLand’s 2010-2011 schedule. The group says it will push Side Show back to January 2012.
The two shows are about as different as they can be. But Xanadu, which was critically panned, ran for more than a year on Broadway and then toured the U.S. Side Show, which was critically acclaimed, ran for only two and a half months.
Shows what critics know.
In any case, here’s the official word:
FantasyLand Theatrical Productions is honored to announce that the organization has been selected as the southeast regional premiere of Xanadu the Musical. This piece will be replacing Side Show as our April musical, but Side Show will not be completely off of our schedule. Side Show will be moved to January of 2012.
Xanadu follows the journey of a magical and beautiful Greek muse, Kira, who descends from the heavens of Mt. Olympus to Venice Beach, California in 1980 on a quest to inspire a struggling artist, Sonny, to achieve the greatest artistic creation of all time – the first roller disco — hey, it’s 1980! But when Kira falls into forbidden love with the mortal Sonny, her jealous sisters take advantage of the situation and chaos abounds.
The production team promises this piece to be an audience-immersing journey of light, sound and roller skating. Director Christian St John says, “Pull out your roller skates, tight pants, and blue eyeshadow we are going back to the 80’s and one its most popular cult classics.” St. John further adds, “FLTP and the PPAC are transforming our home into a (more) Greek Palace and roller rink all in one performance.”
Director Christian St John invites all actors in the greater Orlando area to pull out their roller skates and join us for auditions for Xanadu the Musical. Auditions will be held on Feb 27 & 28 at 7 pm. Call ahead to reserve your audition slot 407-374-3587.
Xanadu opens April 21, 2011 and runs through May 8, 2011. Showtimes are Thursday through Saturday at 8pm and Sunday at 7 pm. Tickets for this event are $15 to $35 (dinner and a show package – includes parking).
