Theatre Winter Haven Academy is offering a talent contest called the Brightest Star for Polk County kids 9-18. Applications are due Feb. 15.

A Performing Arts Competition for Youth
Application Deadline: February 15, 2011 (5pm)
All application packets must be turned in to the TWH production office (Chain O’ Lakes Complex, 210 Cypress Gardens Blvd., Winter Haven, FL 33880) no later then Tuesday — February 15, 2011 (5pm). Include in your packet a signed Application w/photo release and a (non-refundable) Entry Fee of $25.00. NOTE: A limited number of applications will be accepted on a first come/first served basis.
GROUP ACTS: Please note that each member of your performing team should complete their own application, then those forms should be turned in as a group along with the $25.00 Entry Fee. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted.
To audition, applicants must be a Polk County resident at least 9 years of age on January 1, 2011 and no older than 18 years of age on March 25, 2011. TWH reserves the right to request a certified birth certificate if age comes into question. For group acts, the average age will determine age group category.
All applicants agree to be available for their scheduled audition time AND the final competition event on Friday, March 25, 2011 should their act be chosen as one of the finalists.
Audition Date: February 27, 2011 (1pm-6pm)
Auditions will be held (by appointment only) on Sunday, February 27, 2011 (1pm-6pm). You will be notified of your exact audition time once application packet is received and processed. If you are chosen to compete in the final competition, you will be notified by phone no later than Wednesday, March 2, 1011.
This talent competition is open to young people ages 9-18. If chosen to compete during final competition, acts will be divided by the following two age categories: ages 9-13 and ages 14-18.
In regards to this competition, “talent” is defined as any prepared live performance act including (but not exclusive to) acting; singing; musicianship; magic; acrobatics/gymnastics; dancing; juggling; etc.. Applicants are given only one audition slot and are not allowed to audition within multiple acts. Maximum number of 12 performers allowed during any single audition piece. NOTE: Once auditions are held, substituting performers is prohibited.
Acts will be judged on the following (3) criteria: Showmanship; Creativity/Originality; and Technical Merit.
Each act must be kept to a maximum of 6 minutes in length which includes set-up and strike.
All dress, material, and act content must be family friendly. No live animals, fire, smoke, or outside business promoting allowed during auditions or final competition.
All auditionees must be accompanied by a parent/guardian during their child’s audition. No parent/guardian will be allowed backstage or in audition room during auditions.
A CD player and piano will be provided to those auditioning. ALL other needs must be provided by applicant(s) including music, props, costuming. If using recorded music, the CD must contain only the song to be used during the audition, with no vocal tracks of any kind on it. All CD’s must
be turned in at check-in, clearly labeled with your name and audition # on it, plus the name of the song.
Acts eliminated during the audition phase of this competition are entitled to receive a copy of the judges scoring sheet upon request.
Theatre Winter Haven retains the right to disqualify any act that fails to comply with the above guidelines.
Also, any other circumstances that arise during the course of this event (not mentioned above) that requires a ruling, will be determined by the official Judging Committee.
Final Competition: March 25, 2011
All competitors must be accompanied by a supervising adult who will remain in the audience at all times. Under no circumstances will family members be allowed backstage during the competition.
A panel of judges will determine all winners based on a score system of 1 to 4 in the following three categories: Showmanship; Creativity/Originality; and Technical Merit.
Cash prizes will be awarded to the top two acts in each age category.
1st Place Cash Prize — $500.00 2nd Place Cash Prize — $250.00.
For the final competition, Theatre Winter Haven will provide each act with a piano, CD capabilities, area stage lighting, and up to four (4) standing wired microphones and/or two handheld wireless. ALL other needs must be provided by those competing. No internal sound/light cuing allowed during acts.

- Pre-Audition Orientation: Tuesday, 1/18/10 (6pm—Public is invited
- Application Deadline: Tuesday, 2/1/11 (TWH office by 5pm)
- Audition Date: Sunday, 2/27/11 (1pm-6pm by Appointment at TWH)
- Final Competition: Friday, 3/25/11 (7:30pm on the TWH Main Stage)
Don’t forget to include your Entry Fee when turning in your application. Also make sure the application is signed and filled out in its entirety.
