Sarah Purser, a graduate student in music at UCF, won Florida Opera Theatre’s Orlando Idol competition Sunday night at Trinity Prep.
Purser, 28, was selected by a panel of judges made up of soprano Susan Neves, jazz singer and bandleader Michael Andrew and Rudi Cleare, managing director of the Negro Spiritual Scholarship Foundation.
Purser, who won $1,000 in the contest, is working toward a master’s degree in music, vocal performance and conducting. She is a songwriter and plays guitar in Orlando-area venues.
Natasha Harrison, who works at Disney World, won a $500 Judges’ Choice Award.
Florida Opera Theatre is working toward re-establishing professional opera in Orlando. It is collaborating with the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra and Mad Cow Theatre on a concert staging of La Bohème April 29 and May 1 at Carr Performing Arts Centre. Details here.
