‘Porgy’ in store for local boy Norm Lewis

Congratulations to Eatonville’s own Norm Lewis, the Broadway actor who just wowed audiences as Javert in the London concert staging of Les Miserables. (It’s been on PBS a lot lately — look for it.)

Norm is playing Porgy opposite Audra McDonald’s Bess in American Repertory Theatre’s revival of Porgy and Bess, to open in mid-August in Cambridge, Mass.

Diane Paulus, ART’s artistic director and the acclaimed director of the Broadway revival of Hair, will direct, and David Alan Grier will play Sportin’ Life. Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Suzan-Lori Parks and Pulitzer finalist composer Deidre Murray are revising Porgy “to create a version with a unique identity as a musical,” according to ART.

The production opens Aug. 17. Tickets go on sale April 28. I’d fly to Boston for this one.

  1. I loved the 25th anniversary concert of Les Mis and was surprised to hear Javert was played by a local guy! Wonder if he stood out when he lived here? Did he study at Julliard or ?

    • He went to Edgewater High School and Seminole Community College, worked at the Sentinel for a while and then got a cruise-ship job and a couple of national tours. He’s a talented guy and a nice guy too.
