Saturday, June 18, 2011
The IceHouse Theatre will be celebrating the fantastic energy and talents of all who participated in the 63rd Season’s productions at the annual IceHouse Cubie Awards festivities planned for Saturday, June 18. The event will begin with a 7 pm Reception offering light appetizers and beverages, followed at 8 pm by the Awards and Entertainment. This year’s celebration is being held at the Mount Dora Yacht Club, 351 W. 4th Avenue, Mount Dora. The annual event is free of charge, however, this year, RSVP’s are being requested of those who wish to attend, as the Mount Dora Yacht Club is a more intimate space than the IceHouse auditorium. ‘Cocktail attire or dressy casual’ is suggested for the evening. For more information, call the IceHouse business office (352) 383-3133, ext. 1. Interested individuals may also e-mail email@example.com to receive an invitation and to RSVP.
“The Theatre’s Board of Directors hosts the annual Cubie Awards to recognize and show appreciation to our Mainstage actors, our Youth program students, our Volunteers, our Members and our Sponsors for a successful season,” notes the IceHouse Managing Artistic Director, Darlin Barry. The 63rd Season’s productions being lauded are Bye Bye Birdie, Little Shop of Horrors, Miracle on 34th Street, Steel Magnolias, Bingo! The Musical and Later Life.
The award festivities are nicknamed the ‘Cubies’ in honor of the theater company’s original ice plant home on the shore of Lake Dora, from which the troupe took its name, The IceHouse Players. The evening’s entertainment will include highlights from the upcoming 2011-2012 Mainstage 64th Season shows and will feature several of the IceHouse’s well-known performers in selected scenes and musical numbers from Always…Patsy Cline, Breaking Legs, Annie, Lend Me a Tenor, The Marvelous Wonderettes and The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife. Students from the The IceHouse Youth Theatre program will also perform.
The annual Cubies are awarded by a slate of anonymous judges who vote for their favorites in two production categories: ‘Musical’ and ‘Comedy or Drama.’ Male and Female actors in each category are recognized for Best; Supporting; Featured and Cameo performances. One of the six shows will also be chosen as Production of the Year. This season, a category for ‘Male Guest Artist in a Leading Performance: Musical or Comedy/Drama’ will also be included to recognize two outstanding professional performers who had starring roles: Frank Zeleznik as Kris Kringle in Miracle on 34th Street, and Patrick Ryan Sullivan as Sam in Bingo! The Musical. Young performers from the IceHouse Youth Theatre program will also be recognized in three age groups to receive the Rising Star Awards.
In addition to the performance awards, ‘Outstanding Volunteers’ are recognized with awards for their participation in the front-of-house operations and backstage assistance. Our jack-of-all-trades, 14-year IceHouse volunteer Bernie Dedinsky, will bestow his specially named “Bernie” award upon the recipient of his choice whose volunteerism was outstanding this season.
