Just a reminder that the deadline is fast approaching for this fall’s PlayFest 2.0 at Orlando Shakespeare Theater. It’s a new, shortened version of the new-play festival, and here, once again, are the submission guidelines:
Reminder: the deadline for initial submission is July 15, 2011
PlayFest 2011 Version 2.0 (Nov. 3-6, 2011) is seeking new full-length plays or musicals based on or inspired by works of classic literature or historic events, famous persons or advances in science. We are also seeking plays that deal with the complex social issues of our time. These events, persons or advances can be from any age in history, including the present. We prefer plays that require six actors or less, and have an interest in one-person shows. However, even in the case of one-person shows, we are not looking for history lectures, or museum piece adaptations that are faithful to a fault, but rather dynamic new theatrical versions of classic stories that speak to the contemporary mindset.
In musical submissions, we will be a little less strict about the cast size, but are only interested in musicals based on or inspired by the same criteria as the plays mentioned above.
In order to qualify for PlayFest a play must:
- Not have received more than two professional AEA productions.
- Not have received a Broadway or Off-Broadway production.
- Not have received an Orlando production in current form.
- Not be published for general distribution with the rights held by the publisher.
This year we will select seven new works to be presented as readings. Two of those may go on to be developed in workshops. Playwrights will receive a stipend, travel and housing expenses. Some plays may go on to be fully produced as part of a subsequent Orlando Shakespeare Theater season.
Submission guidelines – please follow these guidelines!
At this time we are not looking for full scripts. We are asking for a simpler initial submission:
Non-musical submissions should include a cover letter, bio/resume, a one-page synopsis, five pages of sample dialogue, a character breakdown with doubling. The mailing address, email address and DIRECT phone number of THE WRITER must be on the cover letter. Musicals should include all of the above and the most recent Demo CD of the show. Please do not send full scripts until requested to do so and do not submit electronically.
Mail submissions via regular mail to:

Email submissions will not be accepted. If you submitted your play previously to PlayFest and it was not accepted, please do not resubmit the same script.
