UCF theater renames itself — again

The Theater Formerly Known as UCF Conservatory Theatre has a new name — Theatre UCF.

Actually it’s an old name, used until around 2004, until then-UCF theater department chair Roberta Sloan changed it to UCF Conservatory Theatre. But the program was never really a conservatory, and now it’s shifting its name back to the much simpler Theatre UCF.

(Before that, and before the program got to be crazy big, it was just the University of Central Florida Theatre. Not so catchy, I guess.)

Anyway, here’s the official word from Theatre UCF:

University Theatre Department Now “Theatre UCF”

The University of Central Florida theatre department formerly known as the “UCF Conservatory Theatre” is changing its name to “Theatre UCF.”

The name change is part of the transition of the theatre department into the School of Performing Arts. The other department in the School is the music department, known as UCF Music.

According to department chair Christopher Niess, this change has been made for several reasons, “The name ‘Theatre UCF’ will make a better fit under the heading of ‘School of Performing Arts’ and it will provide a dynamic brand reflective of the department.”  The new name also makes use of the suggestions from recent departmental assessments.

The name is not a new one for the theatre. It was known as “Theatre UCF” prior to the early 2000s, when former department chair Dr. Donald Seay changed the nomenclature to accommodate the expansion and refinement of the department, including addition of several new Master of Fine Arts tracks, including the MFA Acting, Design, Musical Theatre and Theatre for Young Audiences programs.

Theatre UCF is a program in the School of Performing Arts at the University of Central Florida. The department’s graduate and undergraduate programs focus on providing a competitive edge to theatre artists seeking professional theatre careers, as well as to future creative intellectual leaders. The program offers theatrical presentations year-round to the public at the east Orlando campus. For more information about attending performances call 407-823-1500 or visit www.theatre.ucf.edu.
