Dr. Phillips center receives another big gift

The Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts announced another million-dollar gift today — this one from Winter Park residents Michael and Deborah Sciarrino.

This gift is notable because it comes from somebody who isn’t already on the arts center’s board — and that’s meaningful because it indicates that the arts-center folks are actually getting their message out, something that hasn’t seemed to be happening in recent months.

Or you can call yourself a child of the ‘60s and mean something entirely different – that you remember Mary Quant and Twiggy, that you wore your share of miniskirts and shiny vinyl boots, that you know all the words to “Mrs. Brown, You’ve Got a Lovely Daughter” and that songs like “Wishin’ and Hopin’” and “You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me” were the anthems of your teenage years.

Sarah Purser chosen Orlando Idol

 

Sarah Purser

Sarah Purser, a graduate student in music at UCF, won Florida Opera Theatre’s Orlando Idol competition Sunday night at Trinity Prep.

Purser, 28, was selected by a panel of judges made up of soprano Susan Neves, jazz singer and bandleader Michael Andrew and Rudi Cleare, managing director of the Negro Spiritual Scholarship Foundation.

Tracy McCoy takes job at Gateway

Tracy McCoy, who has worked for both the Athens Theatre and the Sands Theater Center in DeLand, has been given the job of running the 2-year-old Gateway Center for the Arts in DeBary. She takes over from Sandra Wilson, the artist who persuaded the town to build the Gateway Center as a place for residents to enjoy the arts.
