Orlando invites public to ground-breaking festivities for arts center

Well, we never thought we’d see it, but next week the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts is finally breaking ground.

And you’re invited. Here’s info from the Dr. Phillips Center office about what’s going on. My buddy Davis Gaines will be there — will you?

Broadway performers to headline Orlando Phil’s Springs concert

Stephen Bogardus (photo by Carol Rosegg)

Broadway singers Stephen Bogardus and Patty Goble will headline the Orlando Philharmonic’s annual Springs concert May 7 in Longwood.

Bogardus is known for performances in lots of high-profile Broadway shows — especially for playing Whizzer in the original Broadway production of Falsettos (a role he created off-Broadway) and choreographer Gregory Mitchell in Terrence McNally’s Love! Valour! Compassion! Goble has appeared in the original casts of Curtains and Ragtime, among others, and has played Christine and Carlotta in The Phantom of the Opera.

Here’s the official word on the Springs concert, including bios of Bogardus and Gable.

DPAC gets another $1.5 million

Orlando’s performing-arts center project has just announced a new $1.5 million gift from Marc and Sharon Hagle, who already gave DPAC $1 million in 2007.

Best thing about the gift? It’s dedicated toward the acoustic theater, meant to be home to the Orlando Philharmonic and the Orlando Ballet. That’s good news to members of the Orlando arts community, who have fretted that their needs were not being met with the planned construction first of an amplified hall for touring Broadway shows and popular music.

Prince won’t be Adelaide in Orlando ‘Guys and Dolls’

I hear that Tony-winner Faith Prince has had to drop out of the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra/Mad Cow Theatre concert staging of Guys and Dolls, which is set for Oct. 9 at Bob Carr. Prince was supposed to have co-starred with Davis Gaines in the show, as she did in Mad Cow/OPO’s exhilarating staging of Sweeney Todd last year.

Hope you’re celebrating: It’s David Schillhammer Day

This is a music story, not a theater story, but it must be told.

It’s David Schillhammer Day in Orlando.

Schillhammer, executive director of the Orlando Philharmonic, has officially put in 10 years in Orlando, so Mayor Buddy has made it David Schillhammer Day. We should all be celebrating the way I know he is.

Orlando Phil/Mad Cow announce cast of ‘My Fair Lady’

Can you say “dream casting”?

That’s what I thought, anyway, when I read the names of the principals in the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra/Mad Cow Theatre concert staging of My Fair Lady, which is coming up May 8 and happens to be, in my mind, anyway, one of the perfect musicals of all time.
